Ogni civiltà ha generato e rinnovato i propri rituali adeguandoli ai modi di vivere. La nostra società non ha rinnovato i propri rituali di commemorazione funebre, anzi ha spinto il dolore e la morte ai limiti dell'esperienza socio-culturale. Oggi si continua ad aderire ai rituali funebri in ossequio alla tradizione, ma spesso vivendoli in modo quantitativo e meccanico, privandoli così del loro potere lenitivo. Partendo da questa riflessione, nello scenario di un presente alternativo è stata ipotizzata la commercializzazione di TOD: un dispositivo domestico di commemorazione che si integra nelle case e nella quotidianità dei suoi utenti come qualsiasi elettrodomestico high-tech, guidando ad un'elaborazione corretta del lutto. Ogni defunto è simbolicamente rappresentato dal CORE, un dispositivo portatile in cui l'anima della persona scomparsa è simboleggiata dal bagliore di un “fuoco fatuo” luminoso in costante mutamento. L’utente può eseguire la commemorazione inserendolo nel suo HUB domestico ed eseguendo periodicamente tre task: il Contatto, la Conversazione e il Ricordo. Every civilisation has generated and renewed its rituals, adjusting them to the contemporary ways of life. Our society has not renewed its funeral rituals, and instead has pushed grief and death away from our socio-cultural experience. Today, people still observe rituals for the sake of tradition, but the automatic and quantitative execution cancels their healing power. Starting from this consideration, we speculated on an alternate present in which there is TOD, a commemoration home device that blends into the environment and the everyday life of its users just like every high-tech appliance. TOD guides the user to the correct commemoration of the dead, by suggesting the right frequency and execution. Each deceased person is symbolically represented by the CORE, a portable device made “alive” by the glow of an ever-changing luminous "will-o'-the-wisp". The user can perform the memorial service by placing it in their home HUB and periodically performing three tasks: Contact, Conversation and Remembrance.
